When to order a custom pet portrait for Christmas (2026 dates)
2026-11-03
"Is it too late?" is the question that arrives with December. Sometimes it isn't. Sometimes the printed version is, and there's still a lovely way to give it. So here is a plain answer to when to order a custom pet portrait for Christmas, with the real dates from our shop and a short checklist so nothing slows you down.
The short answer: when to order a custom pet portrait for Christmas
For a printed portrait from us, these are the last days to order for Christmas delivery:
- United States: order by Wed 9 Dec.
- Australia: order by Tue 8 Dec (printed in Australia).
- Canada: order by Fri 20 Nov.
Those dates already include the time it takes to make the print and post it. If you can order a week or two before them, do. You'll have room to swap the photo, try another style, or change your mind about the size.
After those dates, the digital portrait still arrives by email, so you can still give something on the day (more on that below).
Why the dates are where they are
I'd rather you understand the dates than just trust them, so here's what sits behind each one.
The painting itself is quick. You upload a photo, pick up to three styles and see free previews in about a minute. Choosing is usually what takes the time, not the making.
Printing takes a few working days. Every printed gift is made to order by our print partner in the US, and production usually takes 2 to 5 working days. We also check each print file before it goes to print, which adds a day.
Then it travels. In the US, our date sits ahead of the postal service's own holiday ship-by date, so there's room for the busy weeks. Australian orders are now printed in Australia and posted by Australia Post. Orders for Canada are printed in the US and posted internationally, which can take two to three weeks in December. That's why the Canadian date comes so much earlier.
A note on Thanksgiving: it falls on Thu 26 Nov this year, and print and post slow down around it. If you're in Australia or Canada, your date lands before it anyway.
A simple timeline that works
If you like to plan, this is the order I'd suggest:
1. Now to mid November: choose the photo. This is the step people put off, and it's the one that matters most.
2. As soon as you have the photo: make the free preview. Try two or three styles side by side.
3. A week or more before your date: order the printed gift. Canvas, framed prints, mugs, ornaments, blankets, puzzles and pillows all come from the same portrait.
4. The week after you order: keep an eye on your email for the shipping note.
5. After your date: go digital (see the last section).
Choosing the photo (the step that saves the most time)
A good photo does more for the finished portrait than any style choice. Before you upload, check:
- The eyes are sharp. If you zoom in and the eyes are soft, try another one.
- Their face fills a good part of the frame. A pet in the distance at the park won't give enough detail.
- The light is soft and even. Daylight from a window is ideal. Harsh flash or deep shadow across the face hides the markings.
- It looks like them on a normal day. Their usual expression, their real coat color, their ears the way they actually sit.
- One pet per photo, unless you want them painted together.
Phone photos are fine. A clear photo taken on the sofa often works better than a posed one.
If you have three good options, make a preview from each. It's free and takes about a minute, and the one you expected to win often doesn't.
If it's a surprise
Ordering in secret is half the fun, and it needs a little extra planning:
- Borrow the photo early. Ask a family member, or quietly save one from their social posts.
- Check the delivery address. If you're sending it straight to them, double-check the spelling and the zip or postcode.
- Pick a style they'd hang. If you're unsure, a classic Christmas or watercolor portrait suits most homes.
- Think about where it goes. A framed print or a canvas sits on a wall all year; an ornament or a mug is a smaller first gift.
If you've missed the date
It happens to all of us. Here's what still works after your order-by date:
- The digital portrait comes by email. You can print it at home, put it in a card, or show it on a phone or tablet on Christmas morning.
- Give the preview now, the print later. A printed photo of the portrait in a card, with "the real one is on its way", is a gift people remember.
- You can still order the printed version. It just may not arrive by the 25th. The site tells you this plainly once a date has passed.
Checklist before you order
- My order-by date: Wed 9 Dec (US), Tue 8 Dec (Australia) or Fri 20 Nov (Canada)
- One sharp, well-lit photo where their face fills the frame
- Free previews made in two or three styles
- The style chosen (and a second choice, just in case)
- The gift chosen: canvas, framed print, mug, ornament, blanket, puzzle or pillow
- Delivery address checked, especially for a surprise
- A plan B if the date has passed: the digital portrait by email
Where to start
The easiest first step is the free preview. Go to pet portraits, upload your photo, pick up to three styles and see them in about a minute.
If you'd like to see a finished example first, the Golden Retriever Christmas portrait shows the style on a real breed, and you can browse every breed from the portraits page. For family photos, kids and other personalized gifts, there's Create.
Take your time with the photo. The rest is quick.
